ALPHA+ The Alpha is a mighty position, and important one. Definitely a position with the most requirements, and the most responsibility. Alphas must be male. There is no exception to this rule, for any member or any dog. The street dogs of Greece understand this, and any pack who disagrees will most likely fall under the wrath of the other two, if only for breaking tradition, and the female Alpha will fall, but this has happened just once in the known history passed down, and ever since, the dogs understand that their leader must be male. Females, they decided, are too easy swayed by emotions, and by motherly instincts, and even if a female insists that she won't be, there are no exceptions made. The Alpha is a position passed down family lines, therefor when a brute takes up this position, he must find a suitable mate within four full moons of his coronation ceremony. Though this may occasionally be a basis of love, it is also often a matter of which female will create the best heirs to the position. After he has heirs, the Alpha's mate may choose to unattach herself from the Alpha, and be allowed to choose her own mate, but because of the status being mother of the heirs lends, most fems tend to stay with him, if it wasn't a matter of love in the first place. If an Alpha dies before he can bear heirs, then the Lieutenant will become Alpha. Responsibilities of the Alpha include actively planning ahead, for the next moves for food and shelter, and for councils of war and battle. Alphas must make sure the pack is healthy and safe as his power can make them be. If a female wants to have pups, she must first get permission from the Alpha, just in case there is a matter of food shortage. Some Alphas are more lenient on rules like these though. LIEUTENANT+ Unlike the males-only Alpha position, the Lieutenant is able to take the rank while being either male or female because this position takes up half the brains of the entire pack and, because of this, is more often female than not. This is also a position entirely appointed based on nothing but observation by the Alpha through his life. So, being an Alpha's pup, one must always keep an eye on those around him for a potential Lieutenant. In the pack, a Lieutenant is almost always at the Alpha's side, and may sometimes even be his mate. He or she is extremely intelligent and quick-witted for plans and suggestions, they are the Alpha's council, and also are relied on to spread news quickly, since the pack often won't sleep in the same place. He or she is responsible for reporting about the pack to the alpha, and will always have advice for him about something to improve the pack. PACK MEMBERS+ These are the dogs of the pack that are the bulk. Whether they be scrawny or tiny, or maybe they're muscular and valiant. Each and every one of them is thrown into this large group. These are the dogs that fight and find food and shelter for fellow pack members, and these are any canine who is fully grown, and no longer considered a pup, but are young enough not to be an Ancient. There are often entire family trees within this rank, and it's often that one or more whole family lives together, but no more than twenty dogs. Actually, considerably less is the average living together. Dogs often settle to make their homes in areas the Alpha or Lieutenant have ordered to be patroled, so rather than wandering there each day, they stay. More often than not, they have been ordered to be patroled in the first place because of a food source, so they are usually ideal homes. NURSES+ These are also, ironically, either gender of dog to take this position. There are usually no more than five or six nurses in a pack though, often one nurse to a litter of pups. If a mother does not want to constantly care for her pups, or knows she will have responsibilities after they are born, she will choose a pack nurse to her litter to care for them either full time save for suckling, or just while she is gone. If Lieutenants ever have litters, they are expected to have a nurse planned before she gives birth, and not only that, but Lieutenants will usually choose more than one. Atop of that, there is almost always what is referred to as a 'pack nurse' who is most likely an older fem dog with heavy motherly instincts and if depended upon for taking care of all pups in the pack. She is depended on when a pup or mother has a sickness, and will usually help females go through birth. PUPS+ These, obviously, are puppies of the pack. Young ones unable to fight, therefor wander off on their own yet. These must always be with a nurse and punishment for sneaking off can be as severe as banishment if he or she has convinced others to sneak with him/her and a death happened. Pups are usually carefree and happy, not usually developing too much personality until later, though some pups tend to show their traits right away. Pups must be fed first and foremost before the other members, since they are the next generation. Often parents, nurses, or the strongest dog living with the litter will tutor them in their favorite fighting moves and other tips for pack living, since they receive no official training. The Lieutenant or sometimes Alpha himself will check on the pups knowledge and ability before allowing them to officially become a pack member. ANCIENTS+ These are rare members of any pack because of the threats that usually cut a dog's life short, be it humans, food shortage, or other dogs. The causes of premature death are endless, which is why you'll hardly ever see an Ancient wandering about a pack. They are considered dogs of seven years or more, meaning some still posess full ability to function for the pack. These dogs have no real responsibilities though, but they will not be given the respect they usually deserve if they don't bring back food once in a while, or make an effort to help the pack.
